October 2002 Meeting

The October 2002 meeting was at 7:00 PM on Tuesday the 8th October in the theatrette at eCentral, Central TAFE, 140 Royal St, East Perth.

7:00 - 7:30 - Administration.

The interim committee members will choose their roles and begin the chartering process required for us to be a fully fledged SIGGRAPH local chapter.

7:30 - 8:00 - Guest speaker: Steve Rice.

Steve Rice discussed his personal history, experiences in the film industry and a vision of the future plans to build a film studio with digital production facilities here in Perth. Steve came on the scene some thirty years ago and has been involved in several major motion films in the UK. He has been exposed to many facets of the industry from building sets to setting frame to camera. He has worked along side such names as Spielberg, Kubrick and Jim Henson. He is a stills photographer by profession who has now advanced to professional documentary making. Steve is currently researching three documentaries -The Boogurlarri Way, The Forgotten Soldiers Of Timor, and The Picnic (Leewin Concert). Steve holds a diploma of Photography and has worked as a photo journalist for the British press and governing body DTI and BOTB.

8:00 - 8:15 - Guest speaker: David McDonnell.

Local 3D artist David McDonnell presented a shading technique created by Illoura's Post Production Grant Adam. David will be demonstrating a technique to fake sub-surface scattering and translucency with the use of scripting and vertex colouring. This results in the illusion of sub surface light scattering.

8:15 - 8:30 - Guest speaker: Chris Dardis.

Local 3D artist Chris Dardis demonstrated the technique of camera projection mapping. This method was pioneered by the likes of ILM and Digital Domain and is used to give the illusion of 3d depth to traditional 2d Matte paintings which results in eye being cheated into believing that the flat image has tangible depth.
