August 2003 Meeting

Our August 2003 meeting was held at:

7 PM on Tuesday the 26th of August 2003
eCentral TAFE
140 Royal St
East Perth
(directions below)

A group of students from the Film and Television Institute's Centre for Advanced Digital Screen Animation ( FTI CADSA) in Fremantle demonstrated their Ship of the Damned project. It's a first person shooter/exploration game based on the Unreal2 game engine. The action takes place on a Navy vessel used for an experiment with cloaking technology. The experiment went horribly wrong. Replete with ghosts, crackling electrical devices and a carefully detailed model of the ship, the game creates a suitably macabre and suspenseful atmosphere.

Chris Thorne, recently returned from SIGGRAPH, presented an impromptu update on the state of the Virtual Earth part of the 3map project that he and his colleagues at Ping Interactive are working on. Last month, Chris and Viveka Weiley presented their work to the Web3D roundup session at the SIGGRAPH 2003 conference in San Diego, California, where they won a prize. There were Australians in two of the three winning efforts.

Jonathan Knispel, interim chair of the Perth chapter, presented an overview of some of the things that went on at the SIGGRAPH 2003 conference. Jonathan also showed a few selections from the Computer Animation Festival, one of the highlights of the event. There was also a good collection of brochures and press releases from the exhibition floor for everyone to inspect afterwards.

Here are some of the forthcoming events links from Jonathan's talk:

Following that, it was giveaway time. Some lucky full members collected prizes including one of the highly prized Pixar walking teapots, SIGGRAPH chapters T-shirts, bags and pins from the SIGGRAPH 2003 conference and a Houdini Apprentice CD ROM.

There were about 30 people at the meeting, with a stream of great questions from the audience after each talk. This was the first meeting we started offering financial membership at and many attendees signed up. We thank them for supporting the local computer graphics and interaction community.
