Using examples from headus' work on Pitch Black and Farscape, Phil talked about 3D scanning, and its application in visual effects and games development pipelines. Topics covered were NURB, Subdiv and Poly surface fitting to dense polymeshes, UV layout, displacement and normal map extraction, and morph targets.
Phil Dench is a Perth based programmer, specializing in 3D graphics. He has worked in research and development for more than 15 years, the last 12 of that in partnership with designer Jill Smith, together forming the headus (metamorphosis) 3D scanning bureau in 1995. Phil's main area of interest has been the development of tools for the processing of 3D scan data, and these have been sold world-wide to other service bureaus, visual effects production companies and games developers. Weta Digital used Phil's tools recently to create surfaces and textures, from 3D scans, for one really big monkey and several other creatures in King Kong. Phil holds a Grad.Dip.Comp and B.App.Sci from Curtin University.
